We have had a wonderful season for fruit at Bute Produce. The new fruit cage has prevented the birds from ransacking the berry bushes. Red and green gooseberries plumped by timely rain and sweetened with burst of sunshine. Blueberries and blackberries glistening like jewels. We have also had a good crop of rhubarb. Raspberries are on their way.
You can’t beat eating seasonal fruit, freshly picked, rinsed and in a bowl with a spoonful of natural yoghurt. Or the essential ingredient in an aromatic crumble. My favourite is to capture a little bit of summer in a jar, for dipping into when the cooler air of autumn comes in.
Making jam from fruits really is an easy and happy chore. I had ago at using the breadmaker this year, and it was fantastically easy. Deseeded rose hips, red gooseberries and a stick of rhubarb with equal amount of sugar tipped into the tin, chose the jam making programme and 1 1/2 later, jam was being poured into a sterilised jar.
It’s not too late to pick up some seasonal fruits. See our Monday morning stall at the Health Centre, or pop up to the garden from 8.30am – 4pm any weekday. You can also sign up for our green box delivery scheme, and have wonderful season produce delivered to your doorstep on Friday.
