As part of our Climate Challenge Fund Bute 360 Food Chain project, we have been running a food waste collection pilot with composting as the end solution to turn this waste into a useful resource.
The project is due to finish on 31st March 2016 and we will spend time evaluating what has been learned and planning our next steps.
During the pilot we have diverted over 20,000 kilograms of biodegradable waste from landfill, approximately 35% of that has been food waste. During the pilot we asked for just peelings, unused produce, tea bags, coffee granules and egg shells. Amazing the amount of useful food that ended up in the bin!
As we move towards the end of the project, we thought we would leave you with regular tips on how to prevent food waste by making the most of kit and caboodle.
Stick with it
We waste more fresh fruit, veg and salad than any other type of food. If you are put off the idea of making soups and smoothies because of getting all the clobber out of the cupboard and then washing up all the food processor parts, how about a stick blender instead? Small and inexpensive, they can blend a soup or whip up a smoothie in no time.
